So, grab your coffee and get ready to be in the know of Wellness Trends January 2017!
#1- Gut Health
Gut Health. Though not the most appealing trend, it is one that is booming in the wellness world and for many great reasons. So, to get all science-y on you, gut “health” is defined by “the restoration of your gut’s optimal bacterial flora population”. I know, it’s just as above my head as yours. To break it down, your gut (digestive tract) is happiest when its bacterial population is in check. With hundreds of types of bacteria in our bodies, it’s critical that we maintain a proper balance. If we have too much of one bacteria (or not enough of another), our body becomes unbalanced and can lead to serious health issues (digestive distress, loss of sleep, skin issues, bloating, rapid weight gain). Now that we have a better idea of what the heck gut health actually is, how can we achieve it?? We’ve all heard of probiotics, which are a vital step in keeping our bodies in check. These are a great way to start focusing on a healthy gut. Probiotics are great, but if you can’t already tell, I kinda have a thing for yummy food and yes, you can promote gut health by eating! Some of the easiest ways to do so are eating Fermented Vegetables, Sauerkraut, Kombucha, Cultured dairy products (buttermilk, yogurt, kefir). All delicious and extremely beneficial to our bodies. If you haven’t hopped on the gut train yet, I recommend you give it a go!
This beautiful bright orange spice is taking the world by storm. Though this is not a new discovery, the powerful medicinal benefits are surfacing and intriguing wellness gurus everywhere. Turmeric, most well known as the spice that gives curry its vibrant yellow color, has a long list of incredible health benefits. Strong anti-inflammatory effects, increased antioxidant capacity in the body, improved brain function, lowers risk of heart/brain disease and could potentially prevent various forms of cancer. As a traditional spice in Indian cuisine, this bold flavor can be taken many different directions in your daily cooking. Below, I have linked a few of my favorite turmeric recipes. Give them a try and your body will thank you!
(On recipes below, I would prefer to replace the vegetable oil with avocado or coconut oil!)
- Iced Turmeric Latte
- Weeknight Red Curry
- Spiced Lamb Chops with Garlic Yogurt
- Turmeric Tahini Dressing
I hope you feel a little more “in the know” post reading this, I can’t wait to dive deeper week by week into the wellness world right along with you!
